Need to declutter but you don’t know where to begin? Know you need to start but struggle with figuring out how? You’re not alone. As a Professional Organizer, it is common for someone to call me when they are overwhelmed and don’t know where or how to start.
Let me start by saying IT’S OK! Clutter and disorganization are not a character flaw. It does not define you or who you are. It is simply a problem to fix.
Where to Start
Begin by thinking what area bothers you the most. Most people say all of it! That may be true but notice I said the most. So let’s break it down even more.
Three questions I ask my clients:
- What area do you spend most of you time?
- What in the area is not working for you?
- What would you like to be doing in there that you cannot now?
A lot of times the problem lies in the high traffic areas. I deal with a lot of kitchens since I often work with moms with children. The kitchen is frequently the landing area. Think of it… everyone goes into the kitchen… A LOT during a day.
Every home is different. For you, it may be your bedroom. Or maybe you have not been able to park in your garage for years.
Think about your answers from the questions and you will know where to start. Most people get paralyzed by the where and the how so they never begin.
How to Start
This is going to sound so “duh” but it’s true… Just Start!
Pick up one item and make a decision on it. Have a hard time choosing what to keep or let go of? I have a printable list of questions to guide you through the process.
Have 3 boxes, bins, or bags in the room before you begin and label them-
- another room
Have you ever been organizing one room and go to put something away in another room to find you need to do something in there? You end up going from room to room and never finished what you started? Well, no not anymore!
While you are working and come across something that goes into another room, that item goes into the “another room” box. Only when you are finished will you take that box and distribute it to the rooms where they go. This will allow you to complete the room where you started.
You now have the where and how to start.
So… go get started!
