There are so many things to catch our attention these days and it eats away at our priorities in life.
Let’s conquer procrastination so you can start doing more of the things you love.
Here are my 4 tips to stop procrastinating
1. Make a Task List
Get all of the ideas, thoughts, and your to-do lists out of your head.
Write it down... and I mean everything.
If it is in your head (long term or short term) it doesn't matter, it all gets on the list. After you have your list, you can begin to prioritize and delegate.
When your list is complete, grab your calendar-
- Start with 3 things you can quickly and easily get done within the next 24 hours. Add that to your calendar and mark them off the list.
- Next look at the week and choose what can realistically get done within the next 7 days. Add the tasks from your list a day at a time to your calendar for the next week. Mark them off of your task list as you add them to your calendar.
- Continue the same process until everything is crossed off. You will do this by scheduling the rest into the month then into the year.
As you go into the month and year, you do not have to set actual dates, just rough dates. For example, you don't have to set an actual date to remodel the bathroom next June. Knowing you cannot realistically start it before then, you tentatively schedule it for June.
Going through this process gives you peace of mind since all the tasks that were swimming around in your head (even if tentative) have a scheduled start time.
2. Attack the Dreaded First
Have 3 top priorities every day.
Even if it is:
- Cook dinner
That's fabulous! Whatever your top 3 are for the day, it will become a priority which will result in becoming complete.
Make at least one of your top 3 priorities your most dreaded task. You can spend the rest of your day knowing you did it, not coming up with excuses.
The power of feeling accomplished with skyrocket your productivity and your overall mood.
3. Don't Do What You FEEL Like Doing
Everyone is prone to procrastination. Don't let your feelings or emotions get in the way.
Who really feels like cleaning the bathroom? But aren't you glad when it is done?
Just do it and be glad you did.
Tell yourself it is what you need to do, not what you feel like doing.
4. Get an Accountability Partner
Find someone who:
Make sure this is someone who will give it to you straight. Find someone who can give you a little bit of tough love if you need it.
There is nothing like keeping you on track when you know someone is going to be checking up on you. I found one over a year ago and the accountability really makes a difference!
We all procrastinate in one way or another. There is always that "thing" we don't want to do. I challenge you to start with these steps to make a powerful change in your day.
